Description: This course is designed to provide a basic foundation in the principle of microeconomics. It covers the fundamentals of supply and demand, costs and the production function, market structures, and capital investment as they relate to the efficiency of the firm in allocating scarce resources. It also looks at the problem of market failure as an issue in business ethics and public policy. The study of individual units, firms and households, in relation to the economic system as a whole will assist learners in developing a rational framework for business decision-making. The course seeks to blend the theory of microeconomics with practical applications to day-to-day events. A desired outcome is an ability to understand the theory underlying behavior and to generalize to other situations.

While it focuses on microeconomics, the course does review some of the key concepts of macroeconomics, notably, the trade balance and the role of monetary and fiscal policy that are essential inputs to business planning.

The course is specifically designed as a prerequisite for learners who will take the master''s-level course in Managerial Economics.

Required Textbooks: McEachern, W. A. (2003). Microeconomics: A contemporary introduction (6th ed.). Cincinnati, OH: Southwestern College Publishing.
