WebCT Error 403 (Not Authorized to view this page)

This error occurs after clicking on the log on button for WebCT but before being allowed to log in.
This error is the most common error received by help desk technicians. Users should perform the following to regain access to the course:
*disable any personal firewall software and popup-blocking programs.

Personal firewall software (Symantec® Norton Internet Security, McAfee® Personal Firewall, etc.) in some cases can cause problems in accessing the online course systems. We suggest that when accessing the course system that all personal firewall software is temporarily disabled. You should consult your products user manual for directions on how to disable the product. However, for PC users most of the personal firewall software can be temporarily disabled by right mouse clicking on the firewall's icon in the system tray (next to the clock in the lower right hand corner) and choosing disable.

Popup-blocking software can cause problems when accessing material inside of your course system. Popup-blocking software detects when new windows are opened and closes them. However, in many of our course systems new windows are constantly opening when you enter different aspects of the online system. Popup-blocking software senses this and blocks the window. Because of this when accessing your courses please be sure that you disable any popup-blocking software. Since there is a variety of software on the market, you should consult your software's user manual on how to temporarily disable the software.

*clear your browser's temporary Internet files (cache), including cookies. Also clear browser History

In some cases your temporary internet files and/or cookies will cause problems when accessing courses. This is especially true when these files have not been deleted recently. It is also recommended that you clear your internet history as well. Users should perform this maintenance on a regular basis. For Windows users, to delete you temporary internet files, cookies and history:
1. Close all open programs and windows
2. Go to start
3. Settings and choose control panel
4. Choose internet options
5. Click delete cookies and choose ok when prompted (this can take several minutes depending on the amount of files)
6. Click delete temporary internet files
7. When prompted click the check box delete all offline content and then choose ok. (This may take several minute depending on the amount of files)
8. Click clear history and choose yes when prompted.

*if applicable, disable any Spyware programs (AdAware, Spybot, etc.) that might be running while attempting to login.

Spyware programs have been known to cause problems while logging into some of our course systems. Because there are a variety of spyware programs on the market, please consult your spywares user manual on how to disable your software. The software should be disabled while you are logging in to the course system and should remain disabled until you logout of the course system.

*disable/uninstall any file sharing programs (Kazaa, Napster, etc.)

Users that have file sharing software on their computers will many times have problems accessing the online course systems. File sharing software commonly has adware programs attached to them. When these adware programs run, it has been known to cause problems with log in and accessing some portions of the course systems. It is highly recommended that this software be removed or disabled while logging into your course system and remain disabled until you logout of your course system. Because there is a variety of file sharing software you should consult your file sharing software user manual on how to disable or uninstall the software.

WebCT users may also try accessing the login screen directly by clicking on the click below. If a new window does not open you can copy and paste the entire link into your browser's address bar.

If the error persists, you may also try using Netscape's latest browser. This is a free download available at http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp

To download a newer version of Microsoft® Internet Explorer on a Microsoft® Windows computer you should run Windows update.

I cannot get into my quiz, each time I try to enter; it goes back to beginning page. What do I do?

Many quizzes in WebCT are "pop-up" quizzes. In order to use them, you MUST disable any pop-up and/or ad blockers you have on your machine. If you do not do this, the quiz will not work correctly.

When I try to log into WebCT, I am getting redirected to another website (Optimizer.com, NavPerfect, etc.)

Although we cannot recommend any software by name, there are few programs available on the web which can remove adware / spyware, which you can download and use at your own risk. You can also try looking into the redirected site and see if they have suggested some way of removing their adware.

Secondly if you do not want to go the above route, try downloading Netscape 7.2 from the following link if you do not have one. For most of the cases like this it seems to work. http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp
