Internet Explorer browser settings:

Enable Java: Please use the Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment (JRE), not the Microsoft JVM. The minimum JRE WebCT will run on is 1.4.1, however 1.4.2_08 or higher is strongly recommended. The installer for the latest version of Sun's JRE can be downloaded here. For Microsoft Internet Explorer, switch to the Sun JRE by following the steps below:


1. Open the Windows Control Panel by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.


2. Locate and double-click Java Plug-in icon. The Java(TM) Plug-in Control Panel appears.

3. Click the Browser tab.
4. Under Settings, select the checkbox next to your browser.

5. Click Apply to save your settings.
6. Restart the browser.

Enable JavaScript (scripting):


1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options. The Internet Options screen appears.

2. Select the Security tab and then
Click the Custom Level button. The Security Settings screen appears.

4. Scroll down the window until you see the heading for "Scripting". Make sure that the "Active scripting", "Allow paste operations via script", and "Scripting of Java applets" are all enabled. Then click "OK".

• Set Browser Cache:
1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options. The Internet Options screen appears.

3. Under Temporary Internet Files, select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

4. Select the Automatically radio button and then click OK.

Turn off Anonymous Logon:


1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options

2. Select the Security tab and then click on the Custom Level button.

4. Scroll down to the User Authentication settings. Under Logon select the Automatic logon only in Intranet zone radio button and then Click OK.

• Enable Cookies:

  1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options
  2. Tools Drop Down List

  3. Select the Privacy tab

  5. Enable Cookies:

    a.If using a default setting, move the slider to select any of the following privacy settings:
    i. Medium High
    ii. Medium
    iii. Low
    iv. Accept all cookies


    b. If using a custom setting:
    i. Click the Advanced button
    ii. Select Override automatic cookie handling
    iii. Select Always allow session cookies
    iv. Click OK to return to the Privacy Tab

  6. Click Apply then OK

Turn off Pop-up Blockers: If a pop-up blocker is enabled, use of discussion postings, quiz windows, and download links will not work. Depending on the pop-up blocking software you are using, you may be able to set your WebCT server as an allowed site, or you may need to disable the pop-up blocker while using WebCT. Some browsers and security programs come with pop-up blockers, including Norton Internet Security 2003, AOL 8.0 and later, and Safari browsers. Again, disable the blocking software or set the WebCT server as an allowed site.

Enable Show Friendly HTTP Errors:

  1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options

Netscape Communicator browser settings:

  1. Select Edit then choose Preferences
  2. Edit Drop Down List

  3. Click on Advanced and then select the Enable Java option.

WebCT Vista Browser Check function:

When users access the WebCT Vista login screen, there is a "Run a Browser Check" link available to them. This utility will check the user's current browser configuration. The browser type and WebCT Vista automatically detects if Cookies, JavaScript, Pop-up Window, and Java are enabled.
